The term "hydraulics" consists of two parts: "hydro", i.e. water, and "aulos", which in ancient Greek meant "pipe". This alone determines the basic function of hydraulic systems: Liquid flows through pipes. The resulting pressure is used to transmit forces, mainly through hydraulic cylinders. These then drive lifting platforms or presses, for example. Hydraulic oil is usually as the fluid.
